Student Managed Investment Committee (SMIC)
SMIC is a student-run, long only fund that manages $100,000 of the school's endowment fund. This semester, our committee consists of 46 members, including 5 on Exec, with the remaining members organized into 10 teams. Each team specializes in a sector of the S&P 500, we cover all 11 sectors by combining Materials and Utilities sectors into a single team. Each team is led by a Managing Director, who oversees a group of analysts. During our general meetings, we present company pitches through PowerPoint presentations, which include detailed information on the company and financial models, such as the Discounted Cash Flow (DCF), Comparable Company Analysis (CCA), and Dividend Discount Model (DDM). After all the teams' pitches, we hold a Q&A session where Exec asks questions from other committee members to the teams. Finally, we vote on each company to decide if it should be added to our portfolio. Through this process, students gain valuable experience in equity research, financial modeling, public speaking, and teamwork. Membership into SMIC is competitive, requiring an interview and a test.
